Whether you are taking apart a car or building a new wing to the house you will need to use one of the best reciprocating saws available on the market today. However, making your way through the dozens of offers available out there can take quite a lot of time. For that reason we have decided to create this list where we evaluate every reciprocating saw on the market and tell you what the advantages and disadvantages of buying one or the other are. We are going to tell you which one is our favorite too, but you really need to decide if those features are the ones you need or if you need to pick your own favorite.
1. DEWALT Bare-Tool DC385B 18-Volt Cordless Reciprocating Saw
When it comes to reciprocating saws Dewalt is really dominating the market; not necessarily because they make the best or the cheapest but because they have really taken care of covering all the bases. For example the DC385B is a cordless reciprocating saw of tremendous power considering it runs on batteries. You can regulate both the stroke length and the cutting speed. You can replace the blade at the push of a lever, so you do not have to worry about losing the key. Finally, it is a fairly sturdy machine that you can grip comfortably and feel confident as you start cutting that it will not jerk out of control.
2. DEWALT DW304PK 10 Amp Reciprocating Saw
The best thing about the Dewalt DW304PK is right there in the title of the machine: it uses a 10 amp motor for extremely heavy duty cutting. You will need to be able to plug it in so that it will work but once it gets going you get the same excellent control of the stroke speed that you had with the DC385B. The good news is that, if anything should go wrong and the blade should snap, you can replace it at the push of a lever. The other thing that you have to take into consideration about the DW304PK is that it comes with its own bag so that you can keep it safe and have it with you wherever you go.
3. Bosch RS7 + RAP10PK 1-1/8-Inch 11-Amp Reciprocating Saw
When it comes to Bosch in the tool business there is really nothing more that you need to say. They are an island whole onto themselves and their name stands for reliability and excellent functionality. The thing to remember about the RS7 is the fact that it comes with the second strongest motor in this entire list at 11 amps of power. It is also an excellent buy because it comes with its own bag and 10 aditional cutting blades so you can start working as soon as you open the box. Knowing all these it is almost strange that the RS7 has only received a 4.5 star rating on Amazon, but some of that is due to the fact that people usually expect more out of Bosch than from anyone else.
4. Milwaukee 6519-31 12 Amp Sawzall Reciprocating Saw Kit
We told you we would also tell you what our favorite is and the time has come to talk about it. It is the Milwaukee 6519 for several reasons. The first and most important is the fact that it has the strongest motor at 12 amps. But that it not the only reason why we like it so much: it has a gear system like all powerful engines, but it also has a gear protecting clutch that protects both the gear and the motor. It is the perfect tool to use on difficult jobs because even if the blade gets stuck the Milwaukee system stays safe. It too uses a blade lock system that allows you to change blades as you go along. Still, the thing that you need to take into consideration is that, at 120 dollars, this is one of the few reciprocating saws in our list that costs over 100 dollars.
5. DEWALT DWE357 10-Amp Compact Reciprocating Saw
There are probably plenty of professionals who love the Dewalt DWE357 because it is very compact and, at 10 amps, it is also very powerful. The problem we have with it is precisely the fact that it develops so much power, while its size prevents you from really getting a good grip of the tool. That is not to say it is not an excellent tool if you are strong or are planning to only work with wood, but this is not the tool we would choose to cut a bar of steel in hard to reach place. So this is definitely a tool for an expert that knows exactly what to expect and has some experience with the kick back from a tool like this.
6. DEWALT DW310K 12 Amp Heavy-Duty Reciprocating Saw Kit
The Dewalt DW310K is the other 12 amp motor on our list and we would have loved to feature it as our favorite but too many people have complained about the fact that the motor does not have a good enough air intake and it burns out. Also, it only does 2700 strokes per minute and it does not have the clutch gear protector that the Milwaukee has. Still, it is a pretty good and powerful tool and it deserves a spot on our best reciprocating saws available in the market in 2013 list.
7. SKIL 9216-01 120-Volt 9-Amp Reciprocating Saw
There is just one reason why you are seeing this Skil 9216 on this list and that is because it is the safest reciprocating saw you can buy. Not only does it have a relatively weak motor at 9 amps but it also features a pivoting foot. Now, the thing to understand is that the 9 amp motor does its job pretty well, but if the blade gets stuck it does not have such a strong back kick as some of the other reciprocating saws we featured here. Finally, that pivoting foot allows for better grip and additional stability should something happen.
8. DEWALT DC385K 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Reciprocating Saw Kit
There are several features on this cordless Dewalt DC385K saw that make it stand apart from the DC385B that we started this list with. For one the DC385K comes equipped with its own 18 volt rechargeable battery that lasts on average 40% more than regular batteries. It also comes with its own charger, saw and kit box. At 3000 strokes per minute it cuts through any type of wood like a hot knife through butter. And with a 4.5 stars Amazon rating it also meets the approval of most of its users, including ours.
9. PORTER-CABLE PC85TRSOK 8.5-Amp Orbital Reciprocating Saw
The Porter Cable PC85TRSOK is more a tool for wood work than metal with its 8.5 amps motor. But it also has an orbital blade that will allow you to cut at such precise angles that this may easily become the first tool for a sculptor. You also should take into consideration the fact that it only costs 70 dollars and that it did work its way up to a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.
10. PORTER-CABLE Bare-Tool PC18RS 18-Volt Cordless Reciprocating Saw
The PC18RS is really the most mobile of all the reciprocating saws we have featured in this list. It uses a rechargeable battery, that is not included in the package, and it is very compact. You should also take into consideration the fact that it only costs 50 dollars and that it has a tool free blade changing system. So this is the type of reciprocating saw you can always have in your car if you are the outdoorsy type.
